About the Jira + IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management integration

Systems and requirements teams work in IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management (ELM) applications such as DOORS Next for requirements, Engineering Test Management (ETM) for testing, while delivery teams plan and track work in Jira. Every audit and program review depends on tracing a line from requirement to implementation to test to defect. Without a live connection, that line is maintained by hand: IDs copied into tickets, defects re-entered by test engineers, spreadsheets reconciled before every milestone.

OSLC Connect for Jira closes that gap. It enables OSLC Change Management services between Jira Cloud or Jira Data Center and IBM ELM, so a Jira issue, a DOORS Next requirement, and an ETM test case stay linked, live, and bidirectional without either team changing tools or copying data they don't own.

Built on OSLC, the open lifecycle standard already adopted across IBM ELM, that connection doesn't depend on a proprietary sync engine that breaks with every product update.

No copies of data

Unlike synchronization-based solutions, OSLC Connect for Jira never copies or replicates data. Every preview, decorator, and link resolves in real time against the live artifact in its source repository. There is no synchronization engine to manage, no conflict resolution to handle, and no risk of stale data.

Built on an open standard

OSLC is an open standard initiated by IBM and maintained by OASIS. OSLC Connect for Jira implements it natively, which means the integration works within the established authentication and access control frameworks of both Jira and IBM ELM. All interactions are authenticated, logged, and auditable, exactly what IT and compliance teams require.

KEY CAPABILITIES

Jira Software and IBM ELM integration features

OSLC Connect for Jira gives every member of your engineering team the access they need, in the tool they already use. Here are the capabilities that matter most for teams running Jira alongside IBM ELM.

Link to existing Jira Issues

From a DOORS Next requirement or an ETM test case, open the OSLC selection dialog to search and filter Jira issues, then create the link. It's established in both systems in the same action.

Traceability is captured once, at the source, without switching tools.

Create new Jira issues from IBM ELM artifacts

If no matching Jira issue exists, users can create one (e.g. a story from DOORS Next, or a defect from a failed ETM test step), without leaving ELM. The new issue and the link both exist the moment you save.

Requirements and test failures turn into tracked Jira work immediately, with the link already in place.

Preview live Jira data in IBM ELM applications

Hover over any linked artifact to see a real-time preview: a Jira story rendered inside IBM DOORS Next, a Jira defect in ETM and sees its assignee, status, and priority, without navigating to the other tool.

Engineers can check delivery status without a second login or a context switch.

From Jira, see referenced Links inline

Jira issues display their linked DOORS Next requirements and ETM test cases directly on the issue, with type and status decorators at a glance.

Delivery teams see what they need without engaging artifacts they don't own.

Manage Links in the Links Explorer

In Jira, open the Links Explorer to sort and filter links by domain, preview linked artifacts, and create new links by dialog or by dragging a requirement straight from DOORS Next onto the issue.

Support for Global Configurations (GCs)

Map Jira releases to OSLC global configurations and maintain correct traceability across product variants and versions.

When a Jira issue is viewed in a specific configuration context, it shows links to the correct version of the upstream requirements. When requirements engineers work in DOORS Next, they see only the Jira artifacts appropriate for their current configuration.

This ensures that multi-variant engineering programs (common in automotive and aerospace) never have cross-version traceability contamination.

Jira data in IBM Report Builder

OSLC Connect for Jira feeds Jira issue data into IBM's Lifecycle Query Engine (LQE), making it available in IBM Report Builder.

Engineering managers and compliance leads can build cross-tool traceability reports that span requirements in DOORS Next, test results in ETM, and development status in Jira, all in a single report, without manual data extraction. This is the foundation of audit-ready lifecycle traceability for ISO 26262, ASPICE, and DO-178C compliance.

Explore by IBM ELM tool

OSLC Connect for Jira supports the full IBM ELM suite. If you already know which tool you need to connect to Jira, go straight to the dedicated integration page for detailed capabilities, use cases, and configuration guidance.

Jira + IBM DOORS Next

Connect Jira issues directly to requirements in IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS Next. Create bi-directional traceability links, preview requirements live in Jira, surface requirement status as link decorators, and include Jira data in IBM Report Builder compliance reports.

Jira + IBM Engineering Test Management

Connect Jira defects and stories to test cases and test results in IBM ETM. File Jira issues directly from an ETM test execution without leaving the tool, link test evidence to upstream requirements, and close the traceability loop from requirement through test to defect.

HOW IT WORKS

Key steps to set up and use the Jira + IBM ELM integration

OSLC Connect for Jira makes it easy to seamlessly integrate Jira Software with IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management. See how you can get set up and started in minutes.

Install and connect

Install the Forge app from the Atlassian Marketplace, authorize it via OAuth, and point the OSLC broker at your DOORS Next and ETM servers. Firewalls only need to allow standard HTTP between the three zones: Jira Cloud, the broker, and your enterprise network.

Create and navigate links

Users create OSLC links directly from Jira or from IBM ELM tools. The linking dialog embeds the native IBM ELM artifact picker inside Jira, so engineers search and select requirements, test cases, or work items without leaving their workflow. Links are typed by OSLC relationship role and bi-directional from the moment they are created.

Report on the full traceability chain

Jira artifacts flow into IBM Report Builder through a TRS feed. Build reports that trace requirement to implementation to test to defect, in one place, without a manual export.

BENEFITS

Why teams using IBM ELM choose OSLC Connect for Jira

Teams in regulated industries choose OSLC Connect for Jira because it delivers real traceability. Here is why organizations running Jira alongside IBM ELM select this integration over the alternatives.

Full lifecycle traceability for regulated industries

Demonstrate compliance with ISO 26262, DO-178C, IEC 61508, and ASPICE without manual data extraction. OSLC links connect requirements, development work, and test evidence across tool boundaries, and IBM Report Builder can query that complete trace for audit-ready reports.

No data migration, no infrastructure risk

There is no ETL pipeline, no synchronization database, and no data to migrate or reconcile. The OSLC standard handles cross-tool data access at query time. Your repositories stay exactly as they are. Nothing moves, nothing is replicated, and nothing can get out of sync.

Engineers stay in the tool they know

Jira users work in Jira. IBM ELM users work in IBM ELM. Neither team needs to learn the other tool or maintain dual entry. OSLC Connect for Jira surfaces the right data in each tool's native interface with previews, decorators, linking dialogs, and a consistent look and feel on both sides.

Configuration management without compromise

Global Configuration support means the integration respects IBM ELM versioning natively. Teams working across product variants or development streams get the right artifact version in every view: A requirement that generic synchronization tools cannot meet without complex custom configuration.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about our Jira + IBM ELM integration

Got questions before you start? Here are the answers to what engineering teams, Jira administrators, and procurement teams most commonly ask about OSLC Connect for Jira for IBM ELM.

What IBM ELM tools does OSLC Connect for Jira support?

OSLC Connect for Jira supports IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS Next (DNG), IBM Engineering Test Management (ETM), IBM Engineering Workflow Management (EWM), and IBM Engineering Systems Design Rhapsody Model Manager (RMM). It connects to any IBM ELM tool that exposes an OSLC interface.

How is this different from IBM Engineering Integration Hub (EIH)?

IBM Engineering Integration Hub (EIH) is a synchronization solution: it copies artifact data between repositories and keeps copies in sync. OSLC Connect for Jira uses the OSLC linked-data model instead. This means that no data is copied, no sync engine is required, and every link resolves against the live artifact in real time. This also means ETM can link directly to Jira without routing through EWM, which is a constraint in EIH-based architectures.
