PRODUCT OVERVIEW

What is IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS®?

IBM DOORS, formally known as IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS, is the industry-standard platform for capturing, structuring, and tracing requirements across complex engineering programs. For over three decades, it has been the tool of choice for teams working in aerospace, defense, automotive, medical devices, and railway, where requirements errors have real safety and certification consequences.

At its core, DOORS gives engineering teams a single, structured repository for all requirements from high-level customer needs down to detailed system and subsystem specifications. Every requirement is versioned, traceable, and auditable. When something changes, you know what it affects, who approved it, and when. That level of control is what regulated industries demand, and what IBM DOORS delivers.

The foundation of IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management

Part of the IBM ELM suite, IBM DOORS integrates natively with IBM Engineering Workflow Management, and IBM Engineering Test Management.

KEY CAPABILITIES

What IBM DOORS does best

IBM DOORS goes well beyond a requirements database. Here are four capabilities that make it the go-to choice for complex, compliance-driven engineering programs.

Bi-directional traceability

Link every requirement through the full V-Model from system-level specifications down to test results. At any point in your project, you have a complete, auditable picture of requirement coverage across all levels of refinement and across tool boundaries. Demonstrating compliance becomes a report run, not a manual exercise.

Test Tracking Toolkit

The built-in Test Tracking Toolkit lets you link requirements directly to test cases or test suites and test results. Track and compare test runs and demonstrate full coverage of requirements by the tests conducted.

Scalable Data Architecture

From a 10-person supplier team to a global aerospace program with thousands of modules, IBM DOORS scales with you. Its structured folder, project, and database hierarchy lets you organize complex datasets cleanly, enforce access controls, and maintain data integrity across multiple concurrent development streams.

Structured Change Management

Requirements change. IBM DOORS ensures every change follows a defined process: stakeholder validation, impact analysis, and full audit trail. No silent modifications. No unpleasant surprises at review gates. Your team knows what changed, who approved it, and when.

Benefits

Why engineering teams choose IBM DOORS

IBM DOORS is not just a tool. It's the engineering backbone for programs where requirements failures have real consequences. Here is why teams deploy it.

Catch errors early, before they become costly

Errors caught late in a program cost exponentially more to fix than those caught at the requirements stage. IBM DOORS makes it easy to detect missing, ambiguous, or conflicting requirements early saving engineering time, rework, and cost.

Audit readiness without the last-minute scramble

Compliance audits in regulated industries demand traceability from customer requirements all the way to test evidence. IBM DOORS provides built-in reporting and coverage views that dramatically reduce the effort required for certification preparation, whether you're targeting DO-178C, ISO 26262, IEC 62304, or EN 50128.

Transparent, stakeholder-driven requirements

Every stakeholder (from system architects to customers and suppliers) can participate in the requirements process. Decisions about which features to include, defer, or omit are made explicitly, with full visibility. No more undocumented assumptions leading to expensive rework.

Seamless OEM-supplier requirements exchange

IBM DOORS supports the ReqIF standard out of the box, enabling direct, lossless exchange of requirements data between OEM and supplier organizations. No intermediate formats. No manual re-entry. No broken links.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about IBM DOORS

Got questions about IBM DOORS licensing, deployment, or how SodiusWillert can help? Here are the answers to the most common ones we receive.

What is the difference between IBM DOORS and IBM DOORS Next?

IBM DOORS (also called DOORS Classic) is the original, client-server requirements management platform — mature, powerful, and widely deployed in high-compliance programs. IBM DOORS Next is the modern, web-based version of IBM's requirements management offering, built on the OSLC open standard. Both are part of the IBM Engineering Requirements Management family. DOORS Classic is still actively maintained and used on programs where its depth of capability, scripting flexibility (DXL), and audit trail maturity are required. Not sure which one fits your situation? Contact our team and we'll help you evaluate.

How is IBM DOORS licensed?

IBM DOORS offers three license types and multiple ownership models and the right combination depends on your team size, usage patterns, and project duration.

License types:

  • Authorized user license. Tied to a specific named person. That individual can use the license anywhere, 24/7. Transferable to another user if needed (e.g. a team member leaves or changes role).

  • Token-based license. Tokens float across multiple IBM ELM products. Rather than licensing DOORS, Rhapsody, and Quality Manager separately, you buy a token pool and your team draws from it based on what they are actively using. As projects shift from specification to implementation, tokens shift with them.

Ownership models:

  • Perpetual (purchase). One-time acquisition with lifelong usage rights. Annual maintenance contracts (~20% of acquisition cost per year) cover updates and support.

  • Fixed-term rental. Lower upfront cost, fully tax-deductible in the year purchased, and easy to scale. Costs more than perpetual over many years, but offers maximum flexibility.

  • SaaS. Available for DOORS Next only (not DOORS Classic). Includes infrastructure and hosting; fastest path to getting your team operational.

Not sure which model is right for your situation? Contact us via our contact form, our team will help you map your usage scenario to the most cost-effective option.

Can I evaluate IBM DOORS before purchasing?

Yes. SodiusWillert can arrange trial licenses for qualified evaluators. Reach out through our contact form and let us know your use case, team size, and industry. We'll set up the right evaluation environment for you.

What industries is IBM DOORS best suited for?

IBM DOORS was designed from the ground up for regulated, safety-critical industries. It is widely used in aerospace and defense (DO-178C, ARP 4754A, MIL-STD), automotive (ISO 26262, ASPICE), medical devices (IEC 62304, FDA 21 CFR), and railway (EN 50128). Its audit trail, baseline management, and traceability capabilities make it particularly well-suited for programs where requirements compliance must be demonstrated to certification authorities.

Does SodiusWillert offer IBM DOORS training?

Yes. We offer professional training in English and German, covering IBM DOORS fundamentals, administration, DXL scripting, and integration with IBM ELM tools. Courses are available online and on-site, and can be customized to your team's workflow and experience level. Browse our training catalog.
