PRODUCT OVERVIEW

What is IBM DOORS Next?

IBM DOORS Next is IBM's modern, web-based requirements management solution built to help engineering teams capture, trace, and manage requirements at scale.

IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS Next (part of the IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management suite) gives engineering teams a single source of truth for all requirements, from high-level stakeholder needs down to system and software specifications. Designed for complex, regulated industries (e.g. aerospace, defense, automotive, rail, medical devices), it replaces scattered spreadsheets and documents with a collaborative, traceable, and scalable platform that grows with your project.

Unlike generic document management tools, IBM DOORS Next is purpose-built for systems and software engineering. It supports textual and graphical requirements, structured data models, global configuration management, and OSLC-based integration with the rest of your engineering toolchain including test management, modeling, and project management tools.

KEY CAPABILITIES

What IBM DOORS Next does best

Three capabilities that make IBM DOORS Next a standout choice for engineering teams ready to modernize how they manage requirements.

End-to-End Traceability

IBM DOORS Next lets you link every requirement to its origin, its design artifacts, its test cases, and its verification evidence. This unbroken chain of traceability is what auditors expect, and what helps your team catch gaps before they become defects. Use the graphical explorer to visualize relationships across your entire project in seconds.

Requirements change management

The built-in capabilities for review and approval of changes to requirements ensure that there are no unsolicited changes. All relevant stakeholders and project participants are involved in the process and are informed about updates in real-time.

"Suspect links"

In OEM/supplier projects, you exchange requirements using the ReqIF format. When re-importing requirements into your project, changes by your remote project partner are detected and the corresponding links are marked as "suspect". You are able to quickly identify potential issues and check if a modified requirement needs further adjustments to any of the linked artifacts.

Lifecycle integration

IBM DOORS Next is based on the open Jazz platform which allows you to establish direct links to assets stored in any other Jazz-based lifecycle tools. No copies are created, and no unwanted versions of an asset will emerge. Linking is based on the open OSLC (Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration) standard.

Individual views

IBM DOORS Next allows creation of widely customizable individual views of your data to highlight or reveal specific aspects that would otherwise remain hidden in the abundance of information displayed. Various filtering options are available, e.g. by attributes, link relationships, test results, etc.. Simply switch between views by click.

AI-assisted quality for better requirements, faster

IBM's AI Hub integration brings intelligent quality scoring to DOORS Next by automatically analyzing requirements against industry standards and surfacing recommendations for clearer, more precise wording. Combine this with a natural language query interface and your team spends less time hunting for information and more time building great products.

BENEFITS

Why teams choose IBM DOORS Next

From individual contributors to project managers and compliance officers, IBM DOORS Next delivers measurable value to the teams who adopt it. Here are reasons why teams choose IBM DOORS Next.

Shorten time-to-market

With IBM DOORS Next, projects are accelerated through optimized communication with all stakeholders. Transfer of requirements between OEM and supplier is based on the ReqIF standard, allowing direct export and import of requirements data. There is no need to use intermediate data formats, and time-consuming and error-prone reworking of requirements and links is not necessary.

Reduce certification efforts

IBM DOORS Next supports compliance with functional and non-functional requirements, including the definition of workflows and processes. Compliance with regulatory and other requirements becomes easier, and the effort required to create necessary evidence is reduced.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions we hear often from teams evaluating IBM DOORS Next and from those already using it.

What is IBM DOORS Next, and how is it different from IBM DOORS Classic?

IBM DOORS Next is the modern, web-based successor to IBM DOORS Classic (also known as DOORS 9). Where DOORS Classic is a client-server application with a native desktop client, DOORS Next runs entirely in a web browser and is built on open standards like OSLC and Jazz. DOORS Next offers superior collaboration features, global configuration management for product variants, and tighter integration with the rest of the IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management suite. Both products are still actively supported by IBM, but DOORS Next is the strategic direction for new deployments and growing programs.

What license types are available for IBM DOORS Next?
IBM DOORS Next is available in two main license types: Authorized User licenses (assigned to a named individual) and Floating licenses (shared from a license pool, ideal for teams who don't all work concurrently). Licenses can be purchased as part of various IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management bundles, which can include requirements, modeling, testing, and workflow tools. As an IBM official reseller, SodiusWillert can help you identify the right license type and bundle for your team's size and usage patterns.
Can we evaluate IBM DOORS Next before committing to a purchase?

Yes. SodiusWillert can provide trial licenses so your team can explore IBM DOORS Next in a real environment before making a purchasing decision. We also offer guided proof-of-concept engagements where we help you set up a representative project and work through your specific use cases. Contact us to discuss the best evaluation option for your team.

How long does a typical IBM DOORS Next implementation take?
A basic deployment from server setup, configuration, to initial user onboarding, typically takes two to four weeks. More complex projects involving data model design, tool integrations, or migration from DOORS Classic can take two to six months depending on scope. SodiusWillert provides a structured implementation approach with clear milestones, so you always know where you stand. We've done this enough times to avoid the common pitfalls.
Does IBM DOORS Next integrate with Jira, Confluence, or other tools?

Yes. IBM DOORS Next supports integration through the OSLC (Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration) standard, which allows it to link with tools across the development lifecycle. SodiusWillert offers dedicated OSLC connectors for Jira Software and Confluence, enabling bidirectional traceability between requirements and development artifacts. We also support integration with PTC Windchill, SPARX Enterprise Architect, and other tools. If you have a specific integration in mind, don't hesitate to ask us via our contact form.

Can SodiusWillert help us migrate from IBM DOORS Classic to DOORS Next?
Absolutely.  We follow a proven methodology that covers data mapping, attribute migration, link preservation, baseline migration, and user training. The goal is always to arrive at a working DOORS Next environment that your team can use immediately, without losing the institutional knowledge locked in your DOORS Classic database. We'll assess your current DOORS setup, estimate the migration effort, and work with you to plan a safe transition.
How is SodiusWillert different from buying directly from IBM?

As an IBM official reseller and VAR (Value-Added Reseller), SodiusWillert offers the same IBM licensing at competitive prices but with a level of hands-on, specialized expertise that IBM's direct sales channel doesn't typically provide. Our team has deep experience deploying DOORS Next in aerospace, defense, automotive, and rail environments. We also build and maintain our own OSLC connectors that extend DOORS Next's integration capabilities. You get IBM's product plus SodiusWillert's know-how and accountability as your long-term partner.
