SysML v2 Cheat Sheet: Syntax, Concepts, and Modeling Best Practices

The SodiusWillert SysML v2 cheat sheet is a free, three-page PDF reference to the language's syntax, core concepts, and modeling best practices. Every element on the sheet maps to its chapter in the OMG SysML v2 specification, so you move from quick lookup to full definition in one step.

What's inside the SysML v2 cheat sheet

Systems engineering without SysML is possible, but tedious. This is even more true for SysML v2, whose advantages over the “old” SysML consist of many innovations that make life easier for systems engineers. The downside: there are many new features and thus potentially new sources of error that may impair successful application of SysML v2. Help is now available: our SysML v2 cheat sheet is your perfect introduction to the basics of SysML v2 and, at the same time, your navigator to selected chapters of the SysML v2 specification. The cheat sheet covers SysML v2 in three pages: structure and domain, requirements and behavior, and the metamodel.

structure-domain

Structure & Domain

Model tree, naming conventions, MBSE best practices, key relationships, packages, definitions and usages, parts and items, attributes, quantities and units, ports and interfaces, views.

requirements-behavior

Requirements & Behavior

Requirements, constraints, verification cases, occurrences and time slices, state machines, flows and actions, use cases and analysis cases, table views.

metamodel

Metamodel

KerML vs SysML v2, textual notation, element properties, the SysML v2 API, model element inheritance map with spec chapter numbers.

FAQ

SysML v2 questions

What is SysML v2?
SysML v2 is the second major version of the Systems Modeling Language, an OMG standard for model-based systems engineering (MBSE). It adds a textual notation, a standard API, and a formal semantic foundation (KerML) to model complex systems with more precision than SysML v1.
When was SysML v2 officially adopted?
The OMG adopted the SysML v2 beta specifications in June 2023 and approved SysML v2.0 for final adoption in July 2025, together with KerML 1.0 and the Systems Modeling API and Services 1.0.
What is the difference between SysML v1 and SysML v2?
SysML v1 is a UML profile with graphical notation only. SysML v2 is built on its own kernel language, KerML, offers equivalent textual and graphical notations, provides a standard API, and uses a consistent definition and usage pattern instead of blocks.
What is KerML?

KerML (Kernel Modeling Language) is the meta-language beneath SysML v2. KerML provides the grammar and precise semantics; SysML v2 provides the systems engineering vocabulary; your model describes the actual system.

What is the difference between a definition and a usage in SysML v2?

A definition declares a reusable type and is marked with the keyword def, for example part def Vehicle. A usage applies that type in context, for example part myCar : Vehicle.

Does SysML v2 have a textual notation?
Yes. SysML v2 models can be written and read as text. The textual notation is another view of the same model: it is human-readable, diffable, and suited to version control and CI/CD, while the model stays the single source of truth.
Is the SodiusWillert SysML v2 cheat sheet free?

Yes. The cheat sheet is free to download and is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so you can share it unchanged for non-commercial use.
