Baselines (Configuration Management)

In configuration management, a baseline is a formally approved and immutable snapshot of a system's configuration at a given point in its lifecycle. A baseline captures consistent information about requirements, design, or product definition. It serves as a reference point for managing subsequent changes.

Common baselines include the functional, allocated, developmental, and product baselines. Each is linked to specific documentation. By establishing baselines, teams can manage complexity, ensure alignment with requirements, and track significant, approved configuration states over time.
