Based on how the web is built (the Semantic Web, aka the Web of Data), Linked Data refers to a set of principles enabling structured data from various sources to be queried and connected. Integrated tools powered by linked data automatically share the latest, most accurate data.
OSLC standard (Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration) uses the Linked Data procedure to deliver seamless integration between heterogeneous tools through specified services and interfaces. Therefore, OSLC uses URLs to point to these resources, relying on traditional Web principles.
Benefits of Linked Data
- Unlike data synchronization or data replication, linked data remains in its original repository,
- Linking data breaks down data silos,
- Linking ensures that the data is up-to-date,
- No copies of data are created,
- URI-based vocabulary: allows everything to be linked together.
